How to Move Taskbar Icons to the Left in Windows 11

Windows 11 centers Start along with your pinned apps. If your mouse still heads for the bottom-left corner out of habit, one setting moves them back there. It takes four clicks.

Set the taskbar alignment to Left

These steps work from the desktop and need no restart.

  1. Pick a blank area of the bar, right-click it, then select Taskbar settings.
  2. In the Settings window that opens, select Taskbar behaviors.
  3. Open the Taskbar alignment drop-down and change it from Center to Left.
  4. Look at the taskbar. The icons, with Start first, now begin at the left edge.

Switch to the centered layout again

Open the same Taskbar alignment drop-down and pick Center. Nothing else changes, so you can switch as often as you like.

What this setting does not move

The setting shifts the icons along the bar, and the bar itself stays low on the screen, along the lower edge. In Windows 10 you could unlock the taskbar and drag it to the left, right or top edge. Several threads on Microsoft's Q&A site report that Windows 11 has no setting for that, and many people there ask for it. If you want your icons at the left and one row along the lower edge, the alignment setting above is the whole job. To tuck the bar away instead, hide the taskbar automatically.
